TJ Walker recommends starting a podcast focused on industry trends as a fast, easy way to connect with established industry leaders, provide value, and learn about a new industry. He emphasizes that hosts need not be celebrity-level or expert—position yourself as a journalist asking questions—and that many people will agree to appear to promote themselves or for exposure.
Chapters
An easy, easy tip. It's an advanced tip. 99% of the world won't do it, but it's extraordinarily effective and it is easy to do. Simply start a podcast that covers the trends in this new industry you are exploring now. You can write to anyone and say, hey, I'd like to showcase your expertise on my podcast. Are you available next Tuesday? You'd be amazed at how many famous people, successful people, established people in this new industry will say yes, they've got something they want to promote or it's great for their ego. People who would not meet with you face to face or take an informational meeting with you would be more than happy to do a podcast interview with you. Don't worry if you're not the next Joe Rogan, or if you're not a TV network star or what you look like, nobody cares. Chances are, there aren't that many podcasts in the particular industry or niche you're in, and most of the people who are knowledgeable, especially in your own community, are probably not invited to speak on podcasts very often. So it is an absolute great way of connecting with people, giving value to them first before you ask for anything, and really learning about the industry. So please, if you've never hosted a podcast, that's okay. You don't even have to listen to podcasts. I do want you to think about starting a podcast in your industry about industry trends, and you're not there as the expert. You would be there as the journalist, just asking questions about what's new.
