TJ Walker says speaker's block comes from obsessing over perfect delivery. Reframe speaking as helping specific people, like it's life or death, so you focus on your message and audience instead of how you look or sound.

You've heard of writer's block, but is there such a thing as speaker's block? One of my students wrote to me just the other day and said, tj, I'm really having a problem. I just can't get motivated to start speaking for my practice videos in the online course or anyplace else. Here's what I suggest. Forget having a perfect speech, perfect words, looking perfect. Instead, think of it almost as you really trying to help someone. If you saw a close family member, a small child 30ft in front of you, about to walk onto a busy street where a truck is coming and they could be run over, you would lose your speaker's block. You would be screaming, hey, get out of the street. Don't go. You would be so focused on helping that kid not die. You wouldn't be worried about how do you sound? How's my voice? How do I look? You wouldn't be thinking about any of that because you're focused on helping that one child not die. You're not worried about which word to use or the right word. You're just communicating. Well, I understand not every single day is about someone having a near death experience, but I want you to think about who is it you can help? Clients, customers, colleagues, a family member, people in your community, and then just share with them ideas that you think will help them. Think about your audience, not yourself, and the speaker's block will disappear. I'm TJ Walker. Thanks for joining me. And by the way, if you're looking for more tips on how to speak, more persuasively, how to use storytelling in presenting, I think you'll enjoy an upcoming webinar that I'm holding. There's absolutely no charge. Go ahead and click below and you can sign up.
