From Present Moment to Constant Prompting - Stop Losing Awareness to AI

TJ Walker argues that constantly asking AI to answer questions erodes mindfulness by eliminating the uncomfortable pause where real thinking happens. He proposes a simple fix: pause before each prompt and ask yourself if you've actually thought about the problem first.

Ultimize. There was a time not that long ago when if you had a question, you had to sit with it. You had to think. You had to wonder. You had to be uncomfortable for a moment, at least. That discomfort wasn't a problem. That discomfort was the process. Now that moment's gone. Now the second you feel uncertainty, you remove it immediately, instantly, without hesitation. You ask, You prompt an AI, you get an answer, and then you ask again and again and again, and they're pretty good answers. That's the shift from presence to prompting, from awareness to reaction. And it feels good. Of course it feels good. Uncertainty is uncomfortable. Thinking, thinking your own thoughts, well, that's effort. Waiting is frustration. So when something removes all of that, You use it. You use it a lot. But here is what you're not noticing. Every time you remove that moment of uncertainty, you remove a moment of awareness. Every time you skip thinking, you weaken something. Every time you rush to answer, you disconnect from the process. And mindfulness lives in the process, not the answer. The process, the pause, The space between the question and the response. This is where awareness exists, and that space is shrinking. Let me make this practical for you. You're working on something, you get stuck. 5 years ago, you might sit back, you might stare, you might think, you might take a walk. Now you open a tool, you type a prompt, you get an answer, you keep going. Seems efficient. But something can be missing. You did not observe your own thinking. You didn't explore the problem. You didn't notice your frustration. You didn't sit with uncertainty. You skipped it. And when you skip it enough times, you lose the ability to tolerate it. That's the real danger. Not that AI gives you answers, that you stop being able to exist without them. Mindfulness requires tolerance. Tolerance for silence. Tolerance for uncertainty. Tolerance for just not knowing. And right now that tolerance is shrinking because you're training yourself to eliminate it. Immediate, constant, prompt, answer, prompt, answer, prompt, answer becomes your rhythm. And that rhythm replaces presence. So what do you do? You don't stop using the tool. That's not realistic. You slow down your interaction with it. You insert space. You ask yourself one simple question before every prompt: did I actually think about this? Just that. Did I think? Did I pause? Did I notice? Because that question brings you back. Back to awareness, back to presence, back to mindfulness.
