If No One Disagrees, You May Be Failing | Facilitation Skills

TJ Walker argues that fast agreement in groups usually means people aren't thinking hard enough. He says facilitators should ask for concerns and risks, protect dissent, and treat quick consensus as a warning sign that you're missing something.

Ultimize. Here's something that might feel uncomfortable. If everyone agrees too quickly, you might not be getting the best thinking. I've seen it repeatedly. A group discusses an issue, someone proposes a direction, and within minutes everybody nods. It feels efficient, it feels aligned, but often it's a shallow agreement. People are holding back concerns, deferring to others, or simply Not thinking deeply enough. Now compare that to a facilitator who tests agreement. Instead of moving on, they say, let's challenge this for a moment, or what could go wrong with this, or what are we missing? Now something changes. People start thinking more critically. That's what you want. New perspectives emerge, weaknesses get exposed, and the final decision improves. Here's the key idea: agreement is not the goal. Better thinking is the goal. And sometimes that requires some tension— not conflict for the sake of conflict. It's not a debate club, but space for honest evaluation. Here's how you do it. Normalize it. Let's make sure we test this before we commit. Ask directly, what concerns do we have? What risks are we not seeing here? Then protect the input. When someone raises a concern, don't dismiss it quickly. Explore it briefly. So here's your takeaway: if a group agrees too quickly, slow things down, because strong facilitation doesn't avoid disagreement. It uses disagreement to improve the outcome.
