Keep the Room Engaged Without Becoming the Entertainer | Facilitation

TJ Walker explains why facilitators shouldn't talk more when energy dips. Participant interaction, not the facilitator's performance, creates energy. Four tactics work: add more voices, shorten contributions, move faster between speakers, and switch activities to boost participation.

Ultimize. Here's a trap I see facilitators fall into all the time. They think their job is to keep the energy high by talking more. So when the room starts to slow down, they jump in. More explanations, more examples, more talking. And what happens? The group becomes passive. They listen instead of participate. I've seen it repeatedly, especially with smart, capable leaders who are used to presenting. They sense the energy dip and think, I need to bring this back. A good instinct in general, but not necessarily in facilitations. Here's the problem: the way they do it, by adding more content, actually makes it worse. Because energy in a session doesn't come from the facilitator performing. It comes from participation and momentum. So instead of asking, how do I keep this interesting? Ask, how do I get more people involved more quickly? Here's how you do that. First, increase the number of voices. Instead of one person speaking for 3 minutes, get 3 people speaking for 30 seconds. Second, shorten contributions. Let's keep this brief. Now the pace quickens. Third, move faster between speakers. Let's get a few quick perspectives here. That alone raises energy. Fourth, change the activity. If the group is stuck talking, shift to thinking. Let's take a few seconds to actually think, then we'll share. That resets the attention. Here's the key insight: when participation increases, energy increases. When participation drops, Energy drops. So your job is not to entertain them. Your job is to design interaction, because when the structure is right, you don't need to bring the energy. The group creates it.
