Learn To Critique Your Own Speaking Skills More Effectively By Critiquing Others

TJ Walker teaches you to improve your own speaking by critiquing other students' videos. Identify one strength to reinforce, then one thing to improve. This practice sharpens your ability to spot problems in yourself, even if nobody critiques your work.

Here's a quick update to this course. One of the things I always stress if you want to be a better speaker, presenter, communicator, trainer, is you've got to be on the lookout for better ideas, newer ideas, ways of improving what you're doing. Well, I try to practice what I preach. I'm constantly looking at other trainers, other teachers, other experts on how they create a more effective learning environment for people. And I saw a technique the other day. Teacher just said, comment on someone else's work in this learning forum, critique someone else's work. And I thought, how can I tweak that to make it meaningful to you and to make this a better course experiment? And it occurred to me I should just ask you to critique the speech, the video of another student in this course. And I want you to do it in a set way. Focus on something you like about what they do, reinforce their strengths. Then, and only then, focus on one area where you think they can improve. Now, you can go to the student Q and A section on this platform, or you can go to the student Facebook page. And I've linked to that below. But this is critical for a number of reasons. Number one, it will help all of you if you're getting more feedback from people. But it will also help you even if no one critiques yours, because it will force you to think more critically when analyzing someone else's speech. This, in turn will help you analyze your own speeches. The human tendency is to just focus on the negative. I want you to focus on what your colleagues are doing. Well, but don't hold back if you see room for improvement. But I want you to internalize this so that when you're watching your own rehearsals, your own speeches, your own media interviews, you can give yourself more accurate feedback. So please don't just pass to the next lecture. Take a moment, go to the Q and A section, look at where other people have posted links to their videos and give them feedback. You can do it in the Q and A section. You can do it right on their page if they posted a Facebook or LinkedIn page, or to the Facebook page where many of you have already posted your videos. Thanks.
