Welcome to speakcast. This is the one place on the web where you'll find all the information you need on any aspect of speaking. If you have to speak to the news media, give a public speech, talk to clients, customers, even one on one speaking, we have news information and learning tools for you. How can the power of the media help you in indirectly? Let's go back in time. It's 1975, fall. I'm doing a bicentennial minute on television. 200 years ago today. Patrick Henry. Now, where was I doing this? Cbs? No, I was doing this on a closed circuit television newscast from my junior high school, Quail Hollow Junior High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. Why did I get to do this? Well, the day before I won a Fonzie lookalike contest, I had my hair slicked back, a little more hair back then had my hair slicked back, thought I was cool. So for the next day, I was the mini celebrity in the halls of the junior high school. People saw me do that. Now, did that help me in any big way? Well, I got elected to the student council shortly after that, in part perhaps because of increased name identification. How is that important in the real world? Because let's face it, nobody really cares about student council. But a lot of people have seen their careers boosted indirectly through the media. Diane Sawyer of ABC News became prominent in America not as a newscaster, but because she was America's Junior Miss. Bill Bradley went from being a professional basketball player where he was on television all the time for every game, right into the U.S. senate. How did he do that? In part, yes, he was bright and hard working and smart, but so are a lot of other people. He was famous from the news media. Dr. Joyce Brothers became the most famous psychologist in America, if not the world, not just because of her appearances giving advice about psychological matters. She became famous because she went on a quiz show, a game show in the 1950s and showed off her expertise in boxing, of all things. So never underestimate the power of the media to help your career, to give you some visibility, even if it's not related to the one thing you care about the most. So use the media. Don't turn down opportunities just because it isn't directly related to your one core interest. Speaking with TJ Walker is brought to you in part by by Media Training Worldwide.
