TJ Walker (speaker) explains that modern motivational speakers must demonstrate real achievements or overcome significant challenges and tell/document those stories to inspire others. He contrasts today’s expectations with past decades when one could simply claim the title, and emphasizes building a social-media following and regularly sharing one’s story to gain bookings.

People ask me all the time, tj, how can I be a motivational speaker? And the truth is, it's very different from back in the 50s, 60s, 70s, or even 80s. In those days, you could just simply kind of call yourself a motivational speaker. Write up something, borrow little Dale Carnegie, Napoleon Hill, and boom, you're a motivational speaker. It's not like that anymore. You need to actually accomplish something that other people could look at and say, wow, I wish I could do that. That's motivating me to do this. So it could be starting a billion dollar business. It could be learning how to walk again because you were in a severe car crash. It doesn't have to be monetary, but you need to overcome some great challenge in life and tell your story, document it. That's what's going to motivate people. People. And if you're not already famous, you need to be sharing your story on a regular basis in social media. Build a following of people who like your message and want to hear from you and tell other people they should hire you to be a motivational speaker.
