Nigel Farage on Cameo: Politics or Personal Branding?

TJ Walker examines Nigel Farage charging $95 per Cameo video, which earned him at least $180,000 last year. Walker argues the practice reflects a cultural shift where politicians monetize attention over principle, and questions whether democracies should restrict elected officials from cashing in on public office.

Farage, Cameo and political branding. Nigel Farage has turned $95 cameo shoutouts into a campaign engine. It's truly bizarre. According to the Wall Street Journal, he'll read almost anything on camera and the clips are flooding TikTok and reaching younger audiences. Farage himself said, it got me engaged with a younger audience. Reviewers rave about the videos and he boasts, they're paying me to do it. The paper reports he earned at least $180,000 last year, more than his salary as a member of Parliament. Strategy is not risk free. He has congratulated prank names and once repeated a slogan tied to the Irish Republican Army. Still, the volume and the low price point keep him constantly visible with gaming slang and inside jokes, building momentum. Experts say the packaging looks deliberate, keep the cost low, speak the dialect, and build a brand image and attention economy. Forage is buying culture one short video at a time. Okay, what's the real message here? In our modern culture, in major democracies, there's no low that politicians won't go under. Today they're selling $95 messages where they say anything on cameo. I don't think we're that far away from members of Parliament, members of the Congress, being on only fans and stripping for money. That's what it's come to. Let's dig a little deeper. I first saw this and I thought, wow. My first reaction is Nigel Farage. He's really famous. I mean, I see him quoted all the time. He is a major thought leader and a big poobah in British politics. Can't he be getting million dollar deals for writing books? Aren't there other more dignified ways of making money? And then I realized, oh, I'm showing my age dignity in politics. Maybe that's not really the currency anymore. The currency is attention. As I mentioned in the newsread to you, people want attention. And certainly there was a time when certain attention, like being involved with porn star, would have been the death of a political career. No more. I only sort of halfway facetiously mentioned we're not that far away from members of Congress and Parliament having onlyfans accounts and stripping for money. I'm only halfway kidding. I really could see that happening soon. This culture of anything that gets me attention is good. Anything I can do to give me money is good. Those are the two main things that certainly we're seeing out of Washington D.C. today and in larger parts of our culture. And full disclosure, I will not be on onlyfans or taking off any of my clothing, nor have there been any Requests for me to do so should point out. So what are we to make of this? You know, politicians used to buy ads to get in front of people. Now they're being paid to make ads for other people. A part of me is just boggled by the sheer amount of time. Now they charge 95 bucks. I don't know what percentage goes to Cameo, but he's still making. You got to figure he's making less than 70 bucks per pop. And if they can line up 500 at a time and rattle it out in an afternoon, I guess that's a way to make 4,000 bucks or so. Again, I would just think if you're a famous politician having your own podcast, probably a better way of making money, giving speeches, writing books would be a better way of making money. But apparently what I'm missing out on, and maybe this shows I'm an old boomer, that he just, he likes the fact that he's being seen everywhere. People are getting these videos, especially ones that make him look silly or stupid, sharing it on TikTok, sharing it on X, sharing it other places. And it gets him talked about a lot. And I'm also, I guess being quaint, talking about how there's risk in here because he says stupid things and things that are against his own political values. I guess that's not a thing anymore. We do live in a new world where politics should be intellectually honest or honest in any way, being consistent with principles and is simply not rewarded by voters. It's just not. Folks, you can debate whether that's good or not. But for him to endorse political opponents and countries, other countries, leaderships that he doesn't really endorse doesn't seem to be hurting him politically. Now he offers 24 hour turnaround. He's getting five stars for these. He lost a radio job during COVID Apparently that was his other son side gig. Now, $180. Let's be clear. The average. I don't know what the average income is or the median income in United Kingdom these days. But here in the United States, the median income for a family, a whole family, is about $85,000. So an extra $180,000 is a lot of money to a lot of people. It's substantial. But these days, when a politician who generates fame and high name ID can command so much money as a public speaker or as an author of a book, even if they didn't write it, it does seem a bit bizarre to me. But who knows? We do live in an era where more is more, more media attention, more video clips, more. And hey, I'm guilty of it too. The video you're looking at right now I distribute as a long form, hour long video. Click. I then slice it into five 8 to 10 minute videos. I then slice that into five short form video. Yes. Go out on TikTok and LinkedIn and Facebook and all the other places. So you could say I'm a part of this problem as well. But at some point, I don't know what democracy is going to do it. It's certainly not going to be the us. Doesn't look like it's going to be Britain. At some point, some democracy needs to say, look, if you're going to be an elected public official, don't try to cash in on that. If you've got a side job, another job, but you're also a doctor and you want to keep making money, fine. But the idea that everyone deserves to cash in and get rich because they served in public office for six months is something that is absolutely tearing in to the core concept of what a democracy is all about.
