Recover Quickly from Slipping | Stop Scrolling

TJ Walker says slips happen when you're trying to stop scrolling, and what matters is how fast you recover. His five-step system: interrupt immediately, shorten the slip's duration, remove the trigger, repeat a key phrase, and restart right away instead of waiting.

Ultimize. You're going to slip at some point. You'll catch yourself scrolling longer than you plan. You'll check your phone without thinking. You'll fall right back into the old pattern. That's not failure. That's part of the process, because habits don't disappear. They weaken, and sometimes they come back. The mistake most people make is what happens next. They think, oh, I blew it. I'm back to square one. I'll start again tomorrow. And that's where they lose, not in the slip, in the recovery. Action Step 1: Use the Interrupt and Reset Rule. The moment you realize you slipped, don't keep going. Interrupt it immediately. Put your phone down, even if you still want to keep scrolling. Especially then. That one interruption breaks the continuation. Action step number 2: Shorten the slip. You don't need to eliminate slips. You need to shorten them. If a slip used to last 20 minutes, can you cut it down to 10 minutes, then 5, then 2? That's progress because the damage comes from duration, not the moment. Action step number 3: Remove the trigger afterward. After a slip, change your environment. If your phone is in your hand, put it away. If it's next to you, move it. If you're sitting, stand up. Break the setup that allowed the behavior. Action step number 4, repeat your key phrase. Have one simple phrase ready, something you've heard before, something that reminds you who you are now. You control the device. Check less, live more. Boredom is power. Say it. I know it sounds cheesy or goofy, but it really can work. Say it out loud if possible. That is your reset. Action Step #5. Don't wait to start again. You don't restart tomorrow. You restart now. I mean, right now, immediately. There is no starting over. There is only continuation because this is not a streak. It is a system. Now, here is the shift. You are not trying to be perfect. You are trying to recover faster. Because the difference between someone who changes and someone who doesn't is not whether they slip, it's how quickly they return. Right now, a small slip can turn into a long session because nothing interrupts it. Now you interrupt it early, quickly, consistently, and over time something happens. The slips get shorter. Less frequent, less automatic, until one day they don't feel like the default anymore. So don't judge the slip, focus on the recovery, because control is not about never losing it, it's about getting it back faster every time.
