Redirect Without Shutting People Down | Facilitation Skills

TJ Walker shows facilitators how to redirect off-topic participants without shutting them down. Acknowledge what they said, then use phrases like "Let's connect that back to what we're focusing on" to steer back to the agenda. People tolerate redirection but resent dismissal, so intervene early and stay calm.

Ultimize. Here's a moment every facilitator faces. Someone starts going off track. Now you have a choice. Do you let it continue or do you step in? Most facilitators hesitate. They don't want to be rude. They don't want to be disliked. They don't want to shut somebody down. And I get it. So they just let it go and the session drifts. I've seen this repeatedly. A participant shares something slightly off topic, then Adds more detail, then goes further away from the point, and the facilitator does nothing. Now the group follows the direction and you lose time. Wow, do you lose time. Now here's the shift: you don't need to shut people down. You do need to redirect the session. That's a completely different approach. Instead of saying, that's not relevant— that would be rude— you say something more like, Let's connect that back to what we're focusing on. Or, that's helpful. How does it relate to what we need to decide today? Or, I want to make sure we stay on track. Let's bring it back to our main question. Now, you're not rejecting the person. You're guiding the conversation. Here's a simple structure you can use. Acknowledge, redirect. That's a good point. Let's connect it back to our focus. Or, I hear what you're saying. Let's stay with what we're trying to solve. Here's the key point. People don't mind being redirected. They mind being dismissed. So your language matters. So here's your takeaway. When something goes off track, step in early, stay calm and polite, and redirect the conversation, not the person. That keeps both focus and trust.
