Repetition Is the Only Thing That Works | Stop Scrolling

TJ Walker argues that lasting behavior change requires systematic repetition, not motivation. He outlines a five-step framework: create a daily "Reset Loop," use multiple sensory signals, attach reminders to existing habits, keep them short, and expect resistance when old patterns resurface.

Ultimize. You don't need more information. You already know what to do. You know you shouldn't check your phone constantly. You know you should be more focused. You know you should use it with intention. That's not the problem. The problem is that you forget, not once, but all day long. And that's why change doesn't stick, because insight fades quickly. But repetition stays. Think about how everything else in your life works. You're exposed to thousands of messages every day. What to buy, what to watch, what to click, what to care about. And those messages are never delivered once. They're repeated over and over and over again. You get constant messages to buy, buy, buy on Amazon. You get constant messages to watch the next show on Netflix and the next show on Netflix. You get reminders every single time you step in your car to put on your seat belt. Reminders work not because they're brilliant, because they're constant. Now compare that to how most people try to change their behavior. They watch something once, they hear an idea, they feel motivated, and then they move on. No repetition, no reinforcement, no reminders. So what happens? They go right back to default. Action step number 1: create a daily reinforcement habit starting today. You need one daily reminder, just one, something you repeat every day. This is where your reset loop comes in. Short, simple, Repeatable. You don't listen once. You listen daily or at least regularly because repetition is what retrains your brain. Action step number 2, use multiple signals. Don't rely on one reminder. Use different types. Visual, notes, lock screen messages, audio, short recordings, the Reset Loop, environmental, phone placements, physical objects. The more senses involved, the stronger the reinforcement. Action step number 3: Link reminders to existing habits. Don't create something new. Attach reminders to something you already do. For example, listen to the reset loop while getting ready. Look at your reminder before picking up your phone. Read a cue when you sit down. Now the reminder becomes automatic because it's tied to something that already happens. Action step number 4, keep it short. This is important. Your reminders must be short. If they're long, you won't repeat them. If they're short, you will. That's why the loop works. It's quick, it's easy, it's repeatable. I like to put little mentions, little messages right on my calendar. I use Google. You can use any calendar you want., and I'm sent an automatic message by email. Not that I'm checking email every second, but it's sending me a message telling me to limit my phone time and to do these other practices. So you can use your phone, if used correctly, to remind you to use your phone less. Action step number 5, expect resistance. At some point, you'll think, "I don't need to hear this again." That's when you need it most, because that's when the old patterns are coming back. Repetition feels unnecessary right before it becomes essential. Now, here's the shift. You're not trying to learn something. You're trying to install something, and installation requires repetition. You didn't brush your teeth once and expect it to last. You don't exercise once and expect permanent results. You repeat because repetition creates change. So stop looking for new ideas. Stop looking for better strategies. Start repeating what works because the difference between knowing and doing is repetition. And once you build that into your system, everything starts to stick.
