Let's dive right into the big story of the day. Government shutdown Enters first full day the US Government is officially shut down and neither side shows any signs of backing down. According to the New York Times, funding expired at 12:01am after both parties blocked each other's stopgap bills. Republicans pushed for a short term extension without new health spending, while Democrats demanded the renewal of Obamacare subsidies and the reversal of Medicaid cuts. Senate Majority Leader John Thune accused Democrats of taking government funding hostage. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer countered that Republicans are endangering millions of Americans who face soaring health premiums if subsidies lapse. Unlike 2018, when Democrats quickly restored are retreated after a short shutdown, today's caucus is more unified and less constrained by red state incumbents especially it's not constrained by purple state incumbents. Both sides appear locked into a long standoff with President Trump openly threatening to use the shutdown to slash programs Democrats support. As Senator Brian Schatz put it, Democrats believe health care will eventually tip public opinion. We care in our bones about the people we represent. Okay, what's the real message here when it comes to the government shutdown? It's that it's kind of stupid for Democrats to give a blank check to this administration given that the administration just doesn't spend money on things. Congress actually supports and passes legislation saying spend money here. So the Democrats were really in a no win position. Who's going to win the public relations battle? I don't know but Americans are poised to start losing today. Let's go a little deeper here. This is a complicated issue. Again for those of you looking in other countries, I appreciate you spending time with us today but we have this weird rule in the United States where the Congress passes legislation appropriating money to be spent on various programs, defense bombs, food regulation, regulators who look at our economy and air trafficking. All of that is paid for by federal government dollars. So once the Congress passes a law saying do it and then there's a second time where they have to raise the deficit or the debt ceiling in order to let the money continue going. So there's this.
