Social Media as Distribution, Not Destination

TJ Walker argues creators waste energy chasing likes and followers when social media should be a distribution channel, not the destination. One core idea becomes a podcast, video, and clips across platforms. The real business happens when audiences leave the platform and return to your work.

Ultimize. Most people misunderstand social media. They think it's the goal. It's not. It's distribution. That distinction will save you an enormous amount of time and frustration. If you treat social media as the goal, you'll start chasing the wrong things— likes, followers, virality— short-term spikes of attention that do not translate into anything meaningful. But if you treat social media as distribution, everything becomes clear. Your job is not to impress the algorithm. Your job is to get your ideas in front of people consistently and to build community with them. That's it. Social media is simply the fastest way to do that. Now, here's where many aspiring motivational speakers get stuck. They tell themselves a story. I'm not a social media person. I don't want to play that game. I just want to speak. Sounds reasonable. It's also a form of avoidance because what you're really saying is, I do not want to do the things that give me visibility. And without visibility, I know this is trite to say it, but you're invisible. That is the trade-off. You do not have to love social media. You don't have to obsess over it, but you do have to use it. Because that's where attention flows. Now let's simplify this even further. You don't have to be everywhere. You do not need to master every platform. You don't need to become a full-time content creator. You need a simple system. You create ideas, you communicate those ideas clearly, and then you distribute them across platforms. That's it. One idea can become a podcast episode. The same idea can become a video. That same video can become short clips. Those clips can be distributed across multiple platforms. You're not creating new content each time. You're distributing the same idea in different formats. That is efficient. That is scalable. That is sustainable. Now, here is the important mindset shift. Social media is not where your business lives. It's where your audience discovers you. What matters is what happens after that. Do they listen to you again? Do they seek out more of your content? Do they begin to trust you? That's the real goal. So instead of asking, how do I grow on social media? Ask a better question. How do I use social media to get people into my world and to help those people? Because once people enter your world and stay there, you're no longer dependent on any single platform. You're building something much more valuable, a relationship. And relationships are what drive long-term success in this business. Social media is just the entry point, not the destination. Look at one of my mentors, someone I respect immensely, Cal Newport. He's basically anti-social media. He does his podcast, he does books, but when he does things like give TED Talks, those get 11 million views on social media. So he's still out there. He's just not obsessing over Facebook likes every day.
