Speed Versus Perfection: Why Faster Wins - AI Decision Making Daily

TJ Walker argues speed beats perfection in decision-making. His five-step framework: define the decision, gather directional information, test the failure mode, assess recoverability, then decide and iterate. Two examples show it working: a project manager picks a flexible vendor with checkpoints; a team lead delegates and corrects mistakes as they come.

Ultimize. A director named Emily is choosing between 2 vendors for a major project. Vendor A is established, higher price, predictability. Vendor B is newer, lower price, more flexibility. Emily builds a comparison document. She lists features, pricing, past performance. She schedules 2 more calls, asks for additional references, requests revised proposals. A week passes, then another. Meanwhile, the project hasn't started. Her team is waiting. Deadlines are getting tighter. Emily tells herself she's just being thorough. Well, she's not. She's avoiding risk by delaying the decision. Now let's look at a different approach. Take the same situation, but apply one rule. Once you have enough information to be directionally correct, You decide. Emily defines the decision clearly. Vendor A or Vendor B based on cost, speed, reviews, referrals, recommendations from others, and execution risk. She runs the structured prompt, evaluates options, identifies risks. You pressure test. What is the most likely way Vendor B fails? They underestimate the scope and miss deadlines. Now she adds one more question. If that happens, how recoverable is it? Moderately recoverable with a backup plan. Now she has clarity. Vendor A is safer but slower and more expensive. Vendor B is riskier but faster and more flexible. Instead of chasing perfection, she makes a decision. She chooses Vendor B and builds in checkpoints, weekly reviews, clear deliverables, an exit option if things go wrong. Now the project starts immediately. Compare that to what most people do. They wait, they gather more data, they try to eliminate all uncertainty. But uncertainty never goes to zero, so they stay stuck. Now let's look at a smaller example. A manager named Chris is deciding whether to give a team member more responsibility. He thinks about it for days. What if they're not ready? What if they fail? What if I have to fix it? So he delays, keeps control, does more work himself. 2 weeks later, nothing's changed. The team member hasn't grown. Chris is more overloaded. Now let's apply the same rule. Define the decision: give responsibility now or wait. Run the prompt. Evaluate risk. Pressure test. What's the most likely downside of giving them responsibility now? The answer: They make mistakes. Now the key question: can those mistakes be corrected? The answer: yes. So Chris acts. He assigns responsibility, provides guidance, monitors progress. The team member improves. Chris frees up time. That's how growth happens— not through perfect decisions, but through faster Informed decisions with the ability to adjust. This is the mindset shift. You're not trying to get every decision exactly right, and you're not trying to get the AI to make your decisions for you. They are simply guiding your thought process. You are trying to move forward intelligently because the cost of delay is real. Missed opportunities. Slower progress, accumulated stress, and often bigger problems later. So the rule is simple: get clear, then act. Because speed combined with structure will beat perfection almost every time. In the next step, we're going to look at a different angle entirely— how your decisions shape who you become over time.
