Chapters
New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch is planning to transfer his ownership stake in the team to his children after newly released emails show connections, unsavory connections, to Jeffrey Epstein. A memo sent to NFL executives says Tisch and his siblings are seeking approval to place their remaining 23% ownership share of the Giants into trusts for their children. The emails uncovered among millions of documents released by the Justice Department earlier this year show Epstein introducing Tish to several women and discussing them in crude terms. The messages date back to 2013, 5 years after Epstein had already been convicted of soliciting a minor for prostitution and registered as a high-risk sex offender. Tish said his relationship with Epstein was brief and limited to conversations about business, movies, philanthropy, and adult women. Okay. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said that the league will review the facts before deciding whether to open a formal investigation. Okay, yet another one. This is— if you are a student of crisis communications, as I am, this Epstein case continues to be the most— one of the most fascinating, if not the most fascinating crisis communications issue of our time, perhaps ever. Because as far as I can tell, there's only really one person who has escaped having their entire career destroyed by connections to Epstein. More about that person in a moment. But let's look at some more facts on this case. Following the transaction, the sellers will no longer own any interest in the club. So the NFL doesn't want to be tainted with connections to a pedophile. Okay, so they're obviously nervous. There's going to be pressure on the NFL to say, hey, you can't own an NFL team if you are in bed with a pedophile. That's the reality. So now it's basically, oh, I'm giving it to my children. Now, is this meaningful? Is this just a tax dodge? Is this just something artificial? Will he continue to have a role in running the team and making big decisions? So that's the issue, because if he's just giving it to his children a couple of decades earlier and he still gets to run things and he's still really rich, it raises the question, what really happened here? Not much of anything. So here's what Tish says: as we all know, he was a terrible person and someone I deeply regret associating with. Well, we don't all know that part. We know the first part, we don't know the second part. We don't know that he deeply regretted associating with him. It may be that he deeply regrets getting caught. He may simply regret the fact that it came out. He may think, well, it was a great guy, had a lot of fun with him, and there might not be regret there. So I don't know that. We can't read his mind. NFL commissioner saying, hey, we're going to follow up on this. So some more facts. Steve Tisch is a co-owner and chairman of the New York Giants. He served as the Giants executive vice president since 2005. So he clearly has a lot of power. His family— it's good to have a rich daddy, by the way— purchased 50% of the team more than 30 years ago. And again, the issue is all the communication he had with Epstein long after Epstein was convicted. One message described a woman as, quote, a 10-ass. I'm trying to keep things family-friendly here. That's hard to do when giving facts from FBI documents about Epstein files and emails. So Tish claims the conversations mostly include conversations about movies and philanthropy. I'm sure some of them did. This Epstein character did have Wide-ranging interest, shall we say. But again, let's look at the record. The people who associated with Epstein long after the days of him being convicted for crimes— Prince Andrew lost his title, lost basically everything, has been arrested. Uh, you've got Leslie Wexner, who is still immersed in scandal because of all the connections. You have Leon Black, the Apollo Global Management CEO, forced to step down because of payments involving Epstein. Ghislaine Maxwell, of course, went to prison. You have a lot of people who've had any kind of association with him have their careers destroyed. Famously, former Harvard President Summers had to step away from all professional designations and all professional associations with Harvard, hedge funds, everything else. His career is destroyed. You have Dr. Peter Attia, who was really held in high esteem. I had his book right here on set every day. I had to take it down. It's now over here. He got so much rightful criticism because of nasty, vile things he said about women in his emails that surfaced from Epstein. So pretty much everybody who has had any kind of association with this guy Epstein has had their careers go up in flames. They've had to step down from other institutions. Here's yet another one. The only person who hasn't seemed to really step down is the current president of the United States, aka, also known as Jeffrey Epstein's best friend, also the person mentioned 35,000 times in the Epstein files.
