Swalwell's Real Problem Isn't What You Think

Crisis-communications expert TJ Walker analyzes Eric Swalwell's suspension from California's governor race following sexual-misconduct allegations. Walker argues Democrats enforce stricter standards than Republicans and suggests Swalwell switch parties to survive politically. He warns that criminal sexual-assault allegations are career-ending regardless of messaging strategy.

Ultimize. Democrat Eric Swalwell just suspended his campaign for governor of California amid serious allegations. And I'm going to take a bold contrarian position right now, right out of the gate. I think Eric Swalwell has a bright political future. He just needs to change one tiny little thing, make one small little change. Here it is. Switch his party registration from Democrat to Republican. Because let's be honest, if you look at recent political history, one party has shown an almost Olympic-level ability to say, allegations? What allegations? I mean, you've got Donald Trump accused by more than two dozen women of sexual misconduct, and politically, still the main event. You got Roy Moore, remember that guy? Credibly accused by multiple teenagers, some of them 13, him pursuing them, and he's still won the Republican nomination for Senate, almost won a Senate seat. You've got Matt Gaetz, years of investigations involving him and underage girls, and he continued to be a voice in Congress. You've got Brett Kavanaugh, confirmed to the Supreme Court for life after a bruising confirmation battle, even though all sorts of allegations about his battle of the sexes. Now look, I'm not saying every Republican survives a scandal. I'm just saying enough of them do that if you're building a comeback strategy, you might want to study that playbook, because right now Swalwell is in the wrong league, or at least on the wrong team. And here's the real message, especially for Democrats. You can't get away with this stuff anymore. This is not 1960. This is not Mad Men. Have a martini and we'll never speak of this again. This is 2026. Everything's documented. Everything leaks. Everyone screenshots. And more important, your own party will pull the plug on you fast. Again, only if you're a Democrat. Now, to be clear, no one's saying you have to be perfect, and there are plenty of imperfect politicians in both parties. Take Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California. He had a personal scandal years ago, an affair involving a close associate's spouse. Bad judgment? Yeah. Career-ending? No. Why? Because it was in his past. He addressed it. He apologized. And he wasn't really accused of crimes. There's a big difference there. He moved forward. That's survivable. What's not survivable is having serious allegations, especially allegations of actual crime, assault, sexual assault, drop in the middle of your campaign like a political asteroid. And let's not blur categories here. There's a massive difference between I cheated on my spouse which is never nice, versus I'm being accused of sexual crimes by multiple people. That's really the situation with Congressman Swalwell. Those are not two points on the same spectrum. Those are two completely different galaxies. And here's where it gets even tougher. When the accusations come from your own staffers, people who worked for you, people who are politically aligned with you, it's very hard to say, well, this is just a political hit job. At that point, voters start thinking, hmm, this feels less like a conspiracy and more like a troubling pattern. And this is where I step in as your friendly neighborhood crisis communications expert. People always think, oh, we just need better messaging. We just need a stronger statement. We need good spin. We just need to get out in front of this, control the narrative. Now, there are situations where messaging helps. There are situations where framing helps. There are situations where repetition helps. This isn't one of those situations because at some point the issue is not the message. The issue is the underlying behavior. And no amount of media training, none, can fix behavior that looks fundamentally disqualified. And that leads to the uncomfortable but necessary question for anyone running as a Democrat today. Before you launch your campaign, ask yourself, is there a realistic chance that 2 or more women could come forward during this campaign and accuse me of serious misconduct? If the answer is yes, you probably shouldn't run. I say women, let's face it, we have not seen a lot of women, or really any that I can think of, who are accused of sexually assaulting younger men. At some point it may happen, but let's be clear about where we are today. So let me just add the obvious. Step 1 here: you probably shouldn't commit acts of crime in the first place. Let's not skip that part. I don't want to seem cavalier. That's not a campaign strategy, that's just being a decent human being. But if you are someone who has done those things and you still want a political career, well, Apparently, there's still one viable path. It just may require a different party affiliation. Now, zoom out for a second because this isn't about Swalwell. This is about accountability. Democrats, voters, leaders, institutions are increasingly saying, we're not going to ignore this. We're not going to spin this. We're not going to just ride this out and hope people forget. And yeah, it's messy. Yes, it can feel brutal, but it's also a sign of a system that still has some standards because in a functioning system, power is supposed to come with consequences. And here's the personal development takeaway, because I knew you wanted to know, you can spin a story, you can hire the best PR team in the world, you can craft the perfect apology, the perfect denial, the perfect statement, but if your underlying behavior is broken, Eventually, the truth shows up like an uninvited guest at your campaign launch. And when it does, no script in the world is going to save you because your reputation isn't built on what you say under pressure. It's built on what you did before the pressure ever arrived. And in this case, the pressure arrived and the campaign collapsed almost instantly. That's not a messaging problem. That's a reality problem. And a lot of people in California on the Democratic side are kind of shaky and nervous. Now, on the one hand, they wanted the Democratic candidates to win a while. They wanted fewer Democratic candidates because of weird quirks in California's law. You have a state heavily, heavily, heavily Democratic, but a Republican could still win the governorship because of the open primary. So the Democrats are scrambling around. Swalwell has now lost all of his support. It happened within a day or two of the news disclosure. He's now suspended his campaign, which is really just a cute way of saying, I'm out of here, I'm gone. That's it. He's not coming back. Let's not kid ourselves. So interesting times in California. I'll be monitoring that and keeping you up to date. I'll be honest with you. Most people don't have a learning problem. They have a consistency problem. They'll watch something, listen to something, get fired up for a day, and then life takes over and everything resets. That's exactly the gap I'm trying to fix with Ultimize.
