The Friars Club Just Closed and Took 100 Years of Comedy History With It

In this YouTube commentary, TJ Walker reports that the historic New York Friars Club—long a hub for top entertainers—has closed after its Manhattan building entered foreclosure. The club’s assets were sold at an auction titled "Legends of Comedy: A Century of Memorabilia from the Famed Entertainment Fraternity." The sale included iconic items such as Jack Benny’s violin, extensive photo archives featuring stars like Barbra Streisand and Sammy Davis Jr., and a collection of Frank Sinatra memorabilia that fetched $54,000 each. A trunk of handwritten jokes from multiple generations of comedians sold for nearly $30,000. Walker frames the auction not as nostalgic memorabilia trading but as the funeral of a cultural institution, expressing disappointment that many hoped the artifacts would be preserved in museums rather than dispersed among private collectors.
