TJ Walker argues that while text messages and email work for routine communication, spoken conversation—using the human voice and face—is uniquely powerful for conveying important, emotional, or influential messages. He advises using speech (in person or by voice) for high-stakes conversations rather than taking the easy route of text.

We live in an era where billions of text messages are created every second. And yet, when it comes to really conveying something important, nothing has replaced speaking to someone. So yes, for normal, simple messages, an email, a text, a message on Slack, a text that will work. It will work well most of the time. But there's something special, special about the human voice. There's something special about the human face that conveys information, emotion, depth that simply does not come across with text. That's why it's still considered incredibly obnoxious and hateful to dump someone via a text or a tweet. Important information, important conversations. When you're really trying to influence someone to do something important for them and for you, you need to speak to them. The human voice is a powerful instrument. You don't have to use it for every communication. Certainly I use text and email every day. But for important ones, don't take the easy way out and just send a text.
