TJ Walker explains that the human voice is produced by physical movement of body parts (tissue, bone, muscle) and argues that speakers should move their bodies—head, hands, torso, facial expressions—even during phone or video calls to make their voice sound more engaging and less flat.

You think your voice just magically descends from the heavens and comes down and goes into people's ears? No. Your voice is a function of body parts banging together. Tissue, bone, muscle, all of this is a part of your body. That's what makes your voice. That's what creates sound for other people to hear. It's movement. So if you're giving a speech, a presentation, talking to someone on the phone, and nothing is really moving except. Except your lips and your vocal cords, it's going to sound static, it's going to sound boring, it's going to sound flat. If you want to come across as interesting, as engaging, then you have to move your body. Now, I'm not dancing around here in that kind of movement. My head moves, my hands move, my torso's moving. If you want to come across as more interesting, as more engaging, you have to move anytime you're speaking, even if you're on the phone. That's why it's better to stand up on a phone call. Now, you can't do that for every zoom call, but you can lean forward, your face can move, your head can move, your hands can move. If you want your voice to improve, quite often you just need to move a little more.
