The World Changed Again - And Your Attention Paid the Price

TJ Walker argues that AI chatbots have removed the friction that once forced us to pause and think. Without that pause, we've shifted from intentional thought to reactive behavior, losing confidence in our own minds. The fix isn't rejecting technology but deliberately adding friction back in.

Ultimize. Most people think the big shift already happened. The internet, then smartphones, then social media. That was the transformation. That was the moment everything changed. But it's changed again, and this time it's not just about access, it's about interaction. Before, you consumed information. Now you interact with it constantly, directly, without friction. That changes everything because friction is where mindfulness lives. Friction is the pause before you act. Friction's the moment you think. Friction is the space where awareness shows up. And that space, it's shrinking. Let's go back for a second. You had a question. You didn't know the answer. You sat with it. You thought about it. Maybe you talked it through. Maybe you waited. That waiting was not necessarily wasted time. That waiting was awareness. That waiting was presence. Now there's no waiting. There's no pause. There's no friction. There's just immediate interaction. You think something, you ask a chatbot, you get an answer, you move on, and the speed feels good. Of course it feels good. It removes discomfort. It removes effort. It removes uncertainty. But it also removes awareness because awareness requires time. Time to notice, time to observe, time to be present. And when everything speeds up, awareness gets squeezed out. That's the price. Not time, not productivity, but awareness. Let me repeat that. The price is not the time. The price is awareness. You can get more done. Using AI and chatbots and things like ChatGPT and Claude? I do. You can move faster. You can produce more. But you are less aware while doing it. You're less mindful. And that has consequences. You react faster. You think less. You become dependent on external input. You can lose confidence in your own thinking. And slowly, Without noticing, you shift from being aware to being reactive, from being present to being responsive, from being intentional to being automatic. That's the real shift, and it's subtle. That's what makes it so dangerous. So the goal is not to slow everything down dramatically and have to go back to a card catalog or drive to your local library every time. No. The goal is to reintroduce friction, just enough, enough to notice, enough to think, enough to stay present. Because once friction disappears completely, mindfulness disappears with it. And if you want to stay aware in this new environment, you have to protect that friction deliberately, consistently, every single day.
