Welcome to the Daily national and Media Training Insider. I'm Mike Baco. 20 years ago, in 1991, on this day, Magic Johnson made the announcement that he was HIV positive. Certainly a sad day for all sports fans. But in terms of a message coming out of this, Magic Johnson has been a great ambassador for the HIV and AIDS cause. Aside from a few missteps early on when he was speaking about the disease and answering questions as to how he actually contracted it, certainly some bad interviews on the Arsenio hall show for the last 20 years. You couldn't have come up with a better brand ambassador and media message conveyor than Magic Johnson for what he's meant to the HIV and AIDS awareness cause. He's constantly stuck on his messages. He's constantly worked with other media members, politicians, working with President Bush, then with Clinton, then the next President Bush. He's constantly been in the public eye as the face of this disease, constantly sticking to his message points, constantly speaking about abstinence and using protection. And he's really bridged the gamut of being able to work with these different politicians, but also to be able to get his message out in the media. He's one of the few celebrities who's taken something bad that's happened to them and really turned it into a positive. He's really been an example of someone who's been able to stay in the media eye, stay healthy and have a big enough name brand, big enough celebrity, big enough sports star to keep things in focus in the media, shining that light on everything that's happened over the last 20 years to him and and this HIV epidemic. For the Daily national and Media Training Insider, this is Mike Baco.
