So what do you do if you're set to give a speech but the chairs are half empty and you know more people are coming, but they're just not here yet? If you wait an extra 15 minutes, then I'm punishing everyone else. Well, that's not very nice. But if I just start right into it with the most important points, then the people who are coming in are going to miss it. What do you do? My recommendation is have what's called a soft start. Start by doing something interesting. You may want to take people's questions, if they have questions. That can be one technique. It may be you start off with a point that isn't one of your most important points. So if the people who come in late don't hear, doesn't really matter. But my big recommendation is if people have come to you at a set time, meet your obligation. They've met their obligation, you should meet yours. So don't disrespect your audience. They're to make assessments of you right away. Should they respect you or should they disrespect you? If you make them wait, then why in the world shouldn't they just sit in the back of the room and check email? That's not what I want. That's not what you should want. You should want your audience respecting you, therefore you need to show respect for them.
