Quick public speaking tip of the day. You want to become a better speaker. Next time you're at a conference, big meeting, convention, don't look at the speaker. Stare at audience members. Now, don't make a big scene about it, but if you could somehow stand up on the side so you get a good view of the audience, even better. Look at the audience when they're ignoring the speaker and looking at their cell phones or doodling or texting. What is the speaker saying at that moment? What is the speaker doing at that moment? And then compare how the audience is reacting to that speaker versus other speakers in the day who are perhaps more engaging, more interesting. Yes, you can, of course, learn a lot by looking at great speakers and modeling certain activities on what they do. But you can also learn a lot by really studying the audiences. Because things that make one audience bored and go to their cell phone will probably make other audiences get bored and go to their cell phones, too. So learn not just from the speaker, but from the audience. I'm TJ Walker. I help people speak more effectively.
