A short transcript excerpt of TJ Walker answering a student (Igor) who asks whether it's appropriate to tell a romantic "how they met" story at a wedding when the speaker wasn't a witness. TJ advises telling the story but making clear it was recounted to you by the groom (avoid pretending you witnessed it), use natural phrasing that echoes the groom's words, and trust that many guests will appreciate hearing the story.

What's the best way to give a wedding speech when you have to talk about it the bride and the groom, and you weren't there. Igor is one of my students in my online training class for how to give a wedding speech, and he writes in with the following question. TJ I'm going to give a wedding speech next week, and I have a question. I would like to tell a story about the groom and the bride, how they started dating. It was very romantic, but it was told to me by the groom. I wasn't a witness to the story. There may also be lots of guests who know it already. So do you think it's a good idea to choose such a story? Well, yes, Igor, I really do think you should tell the story. But don't try to pretend that you were the groom. Just recount exactly what happened as the groom told you. So if you are the groom and I'm you, I'd say I'll never forget. Igor, call me up that night. TJ I met the girl of my dreams or the woman of my dreams, and I would just keep retelling it from what you said to me, but recounting what you said about your wife to be. So make it natural. I mean, that's really what happened, I'm assuming. Believe me, nobody at a wedding is going to think it's inappropriate for you to tell a nice romantic story about how they met because there are going to be plenty of people there who don't know. They're going to be spouses, significant others, children, other relatives who have no idea how they met. They're not even sure how they ended up at the wedding. They're just there. So it sounds like an ideal story, but just don't try to fabricate anything. Just recount it as the groom told you and you'll be in good shape.
