TJ WALKER - THE HABIT INFLUENCER - Personal Development | LIVE STREAM

This short YouTube live-stream segment features TJ Walker advising speakers to respect the communication medium. He argues that presenters should not use excessive videos, music, or special-effects slides to cover for poor speech content; instead, prioritize clear spoken ideas and use multimedia sparingly for specific, purposeful examples.

Are you trying to squeeze a square media solution into a round speaking hole? What do I really mean by that? You've got to respect the medium you're using to communicate with people. What works in one medium doesn't work in another. If people are coming to hear you give a speech, don't try to cover up the fact that you don't have a great speech by showing five minutes of video clips or 10 minutes of video, lots of special effects in your PowerPoints. It just doesn't work. Imagine going to your favorite movie theater to see the movie you've been waiting for for months, if not years. You go, the screen parts and all of a sudden it's the text from the book that you enjoyed reading. No matter how well written the book is, you don't want to read text up on a big movie screen when you go to a theater. It just doesn't work to force one medium into another. It's the same with public speaking. If people are coming to a room to hear you speak, don't hide behind lots of glitzy music, special effects animation on your PowerPoint slide or video clips. It's not going to cover up the fact that you have no speech. And I realize you may want to take the eyes off of yourself, take attention away from you. Well, don't give the speech then. The whole point of giving a speech is it's just a few minutes where people are actually focused on you and your ideas. So that's why my recommendation, forget all the glitz. I'm not saying never use video. I use video occasionally if it's a specific purpose, to spotlight somebody doing something well or poorly when it comes to giving a speech. But I don't just put up 5 minute, 10 minute montages to entertain people. Yeah, it's good to be an entertaining speaker. But first and foremost, communicate ideas in a way that people understand you and remember it just by speaking.
