So what's the most effective way to make a simple talking head video using one of these? A cell phone. Believe it or not, you don't have to go to a big fancy studio to make professional or at least useful, helpful videos. You can use your cell phone, but I recommend you follow a few tips. Number one, make sure you have more light in front of your face, not behind you. Even if you're using the light on your cell phone, if you're standing in front of a window, so it's going to darken out your face and the brightest thing on the screen will be the light coming in from the window. So make sure there's more light in front of you than behind you. Preferably have someone else hold the cell phone. You want to frame the video so that your head almost goes to the top of the screen and that it's cutting off around here so people can see your face clearly. You want to be a couple of feet away, no further, so that the microphone can clearly pick up your voice. And just look at the phone is going to be the easiest way. Now, if you want to do it interview style, you could look at one person, but don't have your eyes going back and forth. You'll look literally shifty eyed and that's going to help. Try to again have the camera at your eye level or a couple of inches below. If you're holding it much lower, it's going to shoot up your nose and look awful. Now, if there's nobody around and you have a moment, you really want to document something. There's nothing wrong with just shooting it yourself. Some of the most popular videos I have on Facebook and YouTube, I've shot myself just holding it. Again, the tendency is to have it low. It's shooting up to the ceiling. Hitting the lights looks awful. Hold it a couple of inches above your eye with your arms straight out. Is it going to look perfect? No, but it can still come across as an effective communication tool. So that's really the most effective way to use a cell phone. Here's the final tip, sort of the extra bonus. Don't just do it once and then try to edit, worry or fret about it. Do three, four, five videos. If it's only a minute long and you're doing five videos, that's only five minutes. Then you can pick your favorite one. That's the best way to really make an effective video and to look at it as you go along to figure out what works, what doesn't work. Make constant little improvements, then pick one you're happy with. You do that. And your videos made on a simple cell phone can be quite effective communication tools. I'm TJ Walker.
