Soul writes in with the following question. Tj, what do I do if I'm being interviewed by an online gaming or entertainment website? It's a video interview. There's just one camera. The camera's in front of me, but the interviewer is on the side. And I'm looking at the interviewer. I've seen myself on these interviews, and I don't really like how it looks because all you do is see the side of my face. And in this person's case, the hair is obscuring half the face. What do you do? Here's my advice. In general, most of the time, if you're being interviewed, the easiest thing to do is just focus on the reporter, focus on the interview. You can't really go wrong. Now, if you see clearly that there's only one camera and they are in front of you and you're completely turning to the side and to be interviewed by the host or the reporter. In that case, I would ask the reporter and the camera person, would you like me to occasionally glance over to the direction of the camera as if I'm talking to a third person? Quite often, that's what I do. It's a little bit awkward to do. It feels weird to be ignoring a person next to you and staring to a camera. So you don't want to do that and all of a sudden look frozen and scared and stiff. It's something worth practicing. But if you practice to the point where you look comfortable, you continue to move your head, your face, and you're animated, and you have variety in your tone and voice and movement, then that can be the best of all possible worlds. But I would recommend talking to the reporter and the camera person. They may have a very specific grammar where they want everything to look like it might even make it unusable. Could be a problem with the audio if the reporter is keeping the mic in a particular place. So always ask, when in doubt, just look at the reporter. You really can't go wrong.
