Give your audience one thing, and only one thing, to look at at a time. If you're giving people a handout, then let them look at it. Wait until their eyes come back up and are looking at you to let you know they finished reading. The problem with so many speakers is they're confusing their audience. They're talking. There are handouts going on. There are slides to look at. So the audience is constantly trying to figure out, do I listen to the person read what's on a screen? Read the handout. You're confusing your audience. And as we talked about in previous episodes, human beings are horrible at multitasking. Don't ask them to do it. If you give someone a handout, close your mouth until you can tell the audience has finished reading it. If you're speaking, don't give them a handout while you're speaking. Don't show them a slide while you're speaking. If you put up a slide, that's fine. Don't talk and don't give a handout while people are looking at your slide. Give them as much time as they need to digest the slide. Ask people to do one thing at a time. They'll never be confused. They'll never. They'll never have to wonder about what part of you they should ignore, because there won't be anything to ignore. They can just focus on the one thing you want them to look at that moment.
