TJ WALKER - THE HABIT INFLUENCER - Personal Development | LIVE STREAM

TJ Walker argues that doing many small media interviews builds skill and reputation, leading to bigger opportunities. He cites Alan Dershowitz as an example of someone who mastered media exposure, and introduces Speakcast as a hub for public speaking and media training.

Welcome to Speakcast. This is the one place on the web where you'll find all the information you need on any aspect of speaking. If you have to speak to the news media, give a public speech, talk to clients, customers, even one on one speaking, we have news information and learning tools for you. More is more. In the media world, people worry about, oh, I don't want to be overexposed. Let's face it, unless you are Madonna in the 1980s or J. Lo or Britney Spears, the danger of you being overexposed, pretty slim. Here's the problem many executives face. They tell their PR assistant, well, I don't want to do that publication. They're not important enough, or, oh, that's only talk radio. That's not important to our audience. And that's a big problem because you're hurting yourself in the media world. More is more. The more talk radio you do, the more attractive you'll be to tv. The more trade publications you do, the more attractive you will be to the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal. More is more. Synergy is a word that's bandied about all the time by a lot of people in the media. And typically it means, I don't know what I'm talking about, but I hope to make money one day. But for someone like you, if you have a chance to be in the media, synchronous synergy is a real concept. And that means the more media you do, the stronger you'll be and the stronger your image will be for other media. So do more. Play off radio against tv, TV against print. The more you do, the better you will get. Look at someone like famed attorney Alan Dershowitz of Harvard Law School. He's all over the place. He does talk radio, he does tv, books, columns. If you are a junior high school producer for a small town radio station just at your school and you call up Alan Dershowitz, you'll probably get him. He might not do an hour interview with you, but he'll probably give you two, three minutes. How does that benefit him? That benefits him. When Dershowitz has a new book out, it goes to the top of the New York Times best seller list because he's getting so much media attention, he's become a brand name. That helps him. Chances are that can help you and it can help your business. So don't sit there and think, well, I only want to do this profile interview. The more times you're quoted in any publication, the easier it will be for you to get profile interviews. The more often you do a small town talk radio station, the easier it will be for you to get on CNN or Fox News for a lot of reasons. Number one, you get better at being interviewed. Number two, that 23 year old who is a talk radio producer in Des Moines, Iowa, today, eight months from now, may be the chief booker at CBS Evening News or for msnbc. So these people in the media, they move around a lot. The sooner you get to know them and give a good interview, the more you can build your reputation. So when it comes to the media, you really should have a very strong, powerful reason for saying no more is more in the media world.
