Would you like to learn a sleight of hand trick used by one of the great masters of public speaking? Ronald Reagan did this throughout his career, and it served him very well. He was very keen on the importance of stagecraft, looking the part, looking authoritative, confident, completely in charge. You never saw him with his jacket off in the White House. You didn't see him with his feet on the table. Typically. He really, I think, enjoyed and excelled at the stagecraft portion. And he was, in fact, known as the great communicator. He always wanted to be seen walking with his hands free, whether it is inaugural parade or just walking up to a lectern about to give a speech. He didn't want to be seen, like, clutching a whole bunch of papers, as you saw George W. Bush doing, for example, many situations. He didn't want to be seen pulling a big speech out of his pocket, reminding everybody he's reading. Now he was reading not just with the teleprompter, but he wanted to create the illusion of just talking to people, which is a good thing. So here's what he would do. He would walk up to the lectern. He could wave with his right hand, wave with the left, and it's telling people, hey, I'm relaxed, I'm comfortable. I'm just here to talk. And then here's what he did. He would have his note cards, three by five cards, in his left jacket pocket. So what he would do is get up behind the lectern, wave to the right. While he's doing that, he's pulling. And he didn't have to do it as high as I am because of the camera angle. He's pulling it out of his pocket while he's waving, putting it on the lectern in front of him, and then going like this. That way no one had any idea he was using notes, and it worked.
