TJ WALKER - THE HABIT INFLUENCER - Personal Development | LIVE STREAM

TJ Walker argues that public speaking feels hard because people are not taught it early, unlike skills such as swimming, driving, or writing. He uses analogies—being given car keys at age 10 or thrown into a pool—to show that training makes skills easy for most people. Walker concludes that public speaking is a learned skill and promotes his training options: online courses, monthly public workshops, and private on-site training.

Why is public speaking so hard? That's a question I often get from clients, people I meet everywhere, and it just seems like one of these things that's really hard. I want to challenge you for a moment, though. Imagine if someone gave you at the age of 10, some car keys, says, go drive. Wouldn't that seem hard? What if someone, when you were 4 years old, just threw you in a pool? You'd never had a single lesson on how to swim and just threw you in the pool. You might drown. That would be hard. But for most people in the world, if you go through swim lessons, you become an adult and you've taken enough swim lessons. Swimming is not that hard. You might not become an Olympic gold medal winner, but pretty much anyone who doesn't have major physical problems can learn to be a swimmer. Pretty much anyone can learn how to drive if they go through driver's education to be competent and do it well without causing injury to themselves or others. Public speaking is the same thing. What's different about public speaking is most people, if they go to camp or go to a neighborhood swim club, are given lessons at an early age on swimming. Most people in high school are given driver's education or they do it outside of school before they try to get a driver's test. The difference with public speaking is just nobody's taught. They're not given informal instruction in school or anyplace else. And this is true of public schools and private schools. The private schools are really not any better on this. If you're actually taught, public speaking is easy. So in my view, it's just a void. It's just the idea that we're doing this differently than we do everything else. Writing isn't hard for most. We can text friends and text words and messages. We communicate. But that's only because we went to years of training in elementary school. Learning how to do the Alphabet, learning how to write words, learning how to type. It didn't just happen because it was easy. It's a learned process. Public speaking is exactly the same. I'm TJ Walker. I help people speak more effectively. If you'd like to be a better speaker, give me a call or check out the options we have below. There are online courses that you can learn anywhere, anytime, starting now. We have public workshops every month and private public speaking training workshops all over the world at your location.
