TJ WALKER - THE HABIT INFLUENCER - Personal Development | LIVE STREAM

TJ Walker argues that public speaking is a learned skill, not an innate talent. He challenges the common excuse that some people are "natural" speakers, uses analogies (writers, athletes, toddlers) to make the point, and offers access to a free online public speaking course via his website.

Wow, that guy was just a great natural speaker. She was fantastic. She didn't even use notes for the whole hour. That comment I just heard is one that I frequently hear probably once a week. And I have to tell you, it drives me crazy. That's what's little left of my hair. I've pulled it out from that. It's one of these self defeating notions because once you tell somebody yourself, hey, that person's a good speaker, but it's because they have natural ability. What you're really saying is, well, I don't have natural ability. So the fact that I don't speak as well as that person lets me off the hook. Because hey, that's just born. That's like saying, well, that center on that basketball team is 7 foot 2. Well, of course I can't be the center. Well, it's true, you probably can't be a center on an NBA basketball team if you're 5 foot 9. Natural ability genetics does play a dominant role there, but when it comes to public speaking, no, that's not true. It constantly amazes me how many people are easily fooled by someone who can speak for an hour and not appear to be using notes or a script. Ladies and gentlemen, I could teach your dog how to give a speech for an hour without using notes. It's a really, really simple thing to do, but I want you to really stop for a minute when you see someone who is a great speaker, who seems to be a natural. Ask yourself. Think of your favorite writer, your favorite novelist. Was this person a natural writer and was able to just write without ever having to go to first grade? Without ever having to have a teacher instruct them on the Alphabet and grammar and punctuation? Or did this person go to school every day for 12 years or 16 years ago and get formal instruction on how to write more effectively? Now? Certain writers go on and become much better than others, there's no doubt. But this idea of someone being a natural writer and never needing instruction is ridiculous. If you are not already a great presenter in your own mind and the minds of others, it's probably a function that you haven't been trained. Being a great speaker, in my view, is an incredibly easy thing to learn. Quite often you don't necessarily need me, but I'm going to give you a course online in a moment at no charge, and you can be well on your way to being a great speaker. But I want to really change your way of thinking. There's no such thing as a natural born speaker. Natural speaker. There's nothing amazing about speaking for an hour without using notes. I know someone who speaks for an hour regularly without using notes and she is supremely confident comfortable the whole time. She happens to be my two and a half year old daughter. And you know what? If you have a two and a half year old daughter, she can do the same. Any child can do this so we got to get rid of this notion that somehow it's a unique, divine talent to be able to talk without notes. Public speaking is a learned skill and the beauty of it is since so few people ever bother to get training, you only need a little bit to really stand out as better than all the others. So please, please throw away this notion that someone is a natural born speaker and somehow you get off because you're not. You can be a great speaker. What's your opinion of this notion? If you disagree with me, that's okay. I'd like to hear your opinion. Put it in the comments section below. If you have questions about how to appear more natural, how to speak without notes, post your questions right here. And finally, if you'd like to be a better speaker, I will send you at no cost to you access to my online public speaking course.
