Short live-stream segment in which TJ Walker advises against using "builds" (incremental on-screen additions) in PowerPoint slides. He calls builds tedious and says there is no research showing they improve audience understanding or memory; he permits builds only when demonstrating visual/architectural relationships (e.g., showing floors in an architectural drawing).

Chapters

Is it okay to use builds in a PowerPoint presentation? That's where you have something on the screen. You hit the advance and something else is added on, another layer is added on. Typically it's text, another bullet point. And the speaker, the presenter thinks he's really cool, like an anchorman, and he's reading the next line and the next line as if everyone in the audience couldn't see it. It's tedious, it's boring, and there's simply no research to suggest it increases the odds of the audience understanding and remembering your messages. My recommendation? Don't use builds unless you're doing something where you're demonstrating an architectural drawing and people need to see the visual relationship. The second floor on top of the first floor. Other than that, avoid builds.
