What is the biggest and most important decision you're ever going to make as a speaker for your next presentation? It's not what you think. People often wonder, should I use slides or not slides? Use video, not video. Wear this tie, this dress. Focus on walking around the room. No, those are not the things that are really going to have a huge impact in my experience. The number one decision you make that has an impact on your speech how many message points, facts, numbers, data points you're going to try to convey in your speech. Great speakers can all be different, but the one thing they have in common, they're not greedy. They don't try to tell you everything they've ever learned in the last 10 years. They focus on literally a handful of ideas at most. Awful Speakers are all the same, too. They try to tell you everything they know. They dump way too much data. So to me, the big decision is really figuring out how many messages are you going to try to convey in this presentation. You narrow it down to a handful or fewer, there's a great chance you're going to be successful. If you have a lot more than five points, you've almost completely guaranteed your failure a speaker.
