TJ WALKER - THE HABIT INFLUENCER - Personal Development | LIVE STREAM

Media trainer TJ Walker argues you should build your own audience instead of depending on traditional outlets. He points to DNAinfo and Gothamist shutting down in 2017 after reporters unionized as proof that media jobs aren't stable, and recommends self-publishing on Facebook, YouTube, and blogs to keep control of your work.

Media training.
Tip of the day.
You've got to be your own media.
Case in point, in mid-2017, DNA Info.
And Gothamist, two very popular websites with huge audiences, had their reporters form a union. They voted to unionize themselves. The response from the owner, he completely shut down those organizations. Now one of the media outlets had a huge audience, was actually profitable. The media owner simply hated unions, did.
Not want to do any business with unions. Unions would rather lose money by shutting.
Down the businesses than have unions in his business.
His right, it's a free market economy. You can shut down businesses if you like. Here's the real if you aspire to.
Be a reporter and to communicate new.
Facts, new ideas, new stories to audiences.
My advice is don't count on any media organization anymore.
We see newspapers going out of business every day. The people who are really most successful.
Create their own media.
They harness their strengths.
They communicate with people through Facebook, through YouTube, through their blog, through books.
You can self publish, self do all of those things.
Then and only then, when other media outlets want to hire you for a project, a gig, a show, a column, fine, you can do that. But don't put all your eggs in one basket.
It's precarious times for major media outlets these days.
You can be axed, you can be eliminated instantly. If you have your own audience, your own relationship with fans, you control your own means of production, it gives you a much safer ground. That's why I'm coming to you here through media I've created. This is my TV studio. This is my YouTube channel. If you're watching on YouTube, this is my Facebook page. Now it's true I don't own Facebook.
Or YouTube, but if one of them wants to get rid of me, I.
Can pop up someplace else.
Some of you are reading the text of this discussion right now in a column on my blog, on my website.
Do I do things with major media.
Outlets from time to time?
Sure. Have I been hired by networks before? The.
The government agency that communicates all.
Over the world through radio has hired me before.
I've been hired by different radio and.
TV networks for small little gigs here and there. But I don't put all my eggs in one basket. I don't trust them, frankly, and neither should you if you want to communicate with a larger audience.
Folks, I'm not anti union, but the.
Union'S not going to save you. I'm TJ Walker.
