Great keynote speech for an hour. But if you really want to be an expert, you have to get to the point where you can communicate all of your most important ideas in any length of time. If someone wants you to come do a workshop for two weeks, you better be ready for that. On the other hand, if you're only given 60 seconds, you need to figure out exactly what's most important part of why people are listening to you. They want your judgment on what's truly most important. So occasionally, I'll have world leaders, people aspiring to be members of parliament, and prime ministers in their country hire me for an entire week. I can obviously go into a lot of nuance, but I'm also ready to speak at any time if someone just gives me one minute. So let's test it. If someone says, okay, tj, what's everything I need to know about public speaking? What is it? After you've decided what your audience is supposed to do for you, you need to do five specific things. The first, brainstorm on every single message you could come up with and narrow it down to just the top five. Next, come up with a story, an example, a case study for each one. That is the second thing you need to do. The third thing is if you're using PowerPoint, come up with an image for each point that does not involve text. The fourth thing you need to do is practice your speech on video over and over again until you love it. Might take two times, might take a hundred times. The the fifth and final thing you need to do is show your speech in advance to someone close to your audience size and see if they get it. They get your points. You are ready. Okay, that was 53 seconds. And whether I'm talking to someone for an hour, whether I'm talking to someone for a day or a year long, consulting, relationship, coaching relationship. So much of what I do all flows from those.
