TJ WALKER - THE HABIT INFLUENCER - Personal Development | LIVE STREAM

TJ Walker (from a 2015 live-stream) advises that videotaping rehearsals for speeches or media interviews is worthless unless you actively watch the recordings, make notes about what you liked and disliked, and then rehearse again to reinforce positives and reduce negatives. He emphasizes iterative recording, review, and refinement until you "like" what you see.

Videotaping a rehearsal of your speech or media interview is a complete waste of time if. If you don't actually watch the video. This may sound obvious to a lot of you, but I'm constantly amazed by how many clients where I've instructed them to practice their speech, practice their media interview on video. And they do it. And then when I work with them, we're together, we're recording it, playing it back. They look shocked. It's like, oh my God, I've never seen myself. I'm like, what do you mean you haven't seen yourself? You told me you rehearse on video. Well, yeah, but I don't watch it. If you don't watch yourself, video recording yourself is a complete waste of time. It's like practicing in front of a mirror or talking to your dog. It doesn't really help at all. The number one way to rehearse, to get ready for a speech or a media interview is you have to practice be recorded on video. That in and of itself doesn't help. You then have to watch yourself. But even that doesn't help much. You have to watch yourself make notes what you like, what you don't like, and then do it again right away, trying to do more of the stuff you like, less of the stuff you don't like. The only value of the video is when you keep doing it, keep refining it until you get to the point where you like what you see on video. So some of my clients in large organizations, they have staff follow them around, videotape all their speeches, record their media interviews, put it in their inbox, but it never gets looked at. Complete waste of time. You need to watch your video of every rehearsal until you get to the point where you like your speech or interview after the fact. You need to watch your media interviews and your speeches and make notes of what you liked so you can do more of that in the future. Make notes of what you didn't like so you can do less of that in the future. That's the true way of using video to rehearse your presentation.
