Soundbite of the day goes to president barack obama for telling an espn reporter that he, quote, I spent most of my mornings watching espn. Look, it's a natural human inclination to try to please others, to make someone you're talking to think that you respect them, like them, especially if you do. So I don't want to make more out of this than it deserves, but I do think it was a bit of a blunder for President Obama to actually say, let me get this quote exactly right. I spend most of my time watching ESPN in the morning. I get so much politics. I don't want to be inundated with a bunch of clutter about politics during the day. Well, President Obama does have the advantage. He doesn't have to face any more elections. His name isn't on the ballot, and there are no more midterm elections where he's going to be held accountable. So there's not much political damage for this. But if he were in his first term, I guarantee you this is the sort of quote you would see used again and again and again in advertisements to pummel him. Every one of his adversaries, every talk show host, would be using it again and again and again. So while it's human nature to want to pander, we all do from time to time to make our guests we're talking to feel good. You do have to worry about how those quotes not only can be taken out of context, but they will be taken out of context, at least in this case. There's no more political significance to it from President Obama.
