If you want to be a great communicator, you have to communicate in any length of time from 10 days, 10 hours to 10 seconds. I'm sometimes asked to give a public speaking or media training workshop for five days. Same person. I have to have content for five days. No problem. Sometimes it's for one day, eight hours. But sometimes if I'm at a cocktail party or at a business meeting, someone will ask me, hey tj, what's the secret to being a great public speaker? What's the one magic tip you have? They don't want to hear me talk for 10 days or 10 hours, or even an hour or 10 minutes. So I give them a 10 second answer. And the answer is this. Practice your speech on video, watch it, keep doing it until you like what you see. That's actually less than 10 seconds. But following that one tip solves 90% of people's public speaking problems. If they actually do it. Hearing the tip and nodding doesn't do anything. But if they actually follow that tip, that will solve 90% of your problems. Now, it's not as good as being in a full day workshop with me or some other public speaking coach or a five day workshop, but if you want to be a great communicator, you always have to look at what is the time available to you, how do you make the most of it and gauge someone's interest. And you got to be able to go up or down based on the time. And you've got to really make keen judgments not just by what's the beginning of your normal presentation, but by what is most important based on the time you have. So a lot of people are good at communicating something. And five days or 10 seconds, not that many people are great at communicating in either time frame. That's what you've got to do.
