Have you plateaued as a speaker? Fine, you're not nervous anymore. Your hands don't shake, you're not uncomfortable. People say, oh yeah, Joe Sally, pretty good speaker. But do you feel like you've plateaued? You've just stuck in one place? This does happen in my experience, to most people. Most people in politics and the business world, they just stop learning. Here's the good news. You can improve your speaking skills at absolutely any age. Now, at age 80, you're probably not going to become a dramatically better basketball player, or in most cases, a dramatically better golfer. But I have found when it comes to public speaking, you can improve. But you've got to go back to some of the fundamentals. Most people at some point in their career stop watching video of themselves. They stop rehearsing on video. And that's when the bad habits slip in. You might still be comfortable, but you just stand up there rattling off facts, going through details, going through the motion. You're not really connecting with your audience, and that's why you've plateaued. So my suggestion is do a diagnostic, do a rehearsal, really look at it. Figure out what you like, what you don't like. Get feedback from others, and try to do one thing a little bit better for your next speech. If you do that every single time, you'll never actually plateau. You'll continue to get better and better and better. Even if it's a teeny little bit, you will not have plateaued. I'm TJ Walker.
