TJ Walker (host of a YouTube live stream titled 'THE HABIT INFLUENCER') argues that the Internet has dramatically raised audience expectations for public speaking. He contrasts past low standards (just surviving nerves and covering bullet points) with today’s exposure to high-quality online talks (TED and short viral demonstrations), and warns that average speaking is now seen as below average. He extends the point to restaurants and movies (online reviews and comparisons), urges professionals to improve speaking skills at any career stage, and issues a call-to-action to follow his page for daily tips.

Folks, I have awful, horrible, terrible news for many of you out there. The Internet is completely destroying the life of average speakers, mediocre speakers, competent speakers. Let's face it, there used to be a time where as long as you could sort of get over your nerves, stand up in front of your boss, colleagues, people in your industry, go through some bullet points. That was good enough. That's what everyone else did. That's what people's expectations were down here. Well, unfortunately, the Internet has destroyed this. More and more people are used to looking at quality speakers, especially at ted. The TED Talks are fantastic. But online, everywhere, in their Facebook feed, people are used to seeing great speakers. My goodness, you got a ted. You'll see someone give a speech on how to tie your shoe. It'll bring tears to your eyes. You'll see somebody give a whole speech on how to use one paper towel to dry your hand. Things that you would think. It's impossible for anybody to be interesting and engaging and memorable on that topic, and yet they do it. This is bringing up the standards for all of us. So I'm here to tell you, if you want to compete in the modern world, the modern economy, you're going to have to bring your skills up. Now, we're seeing this in every industry. You can't just be sort of a crappy restaurant, start on a busy street corner and succeed. People will review you on Yelp. They'll compare you to what's really out there. You'll be destroyed. Same with movies. If you have a really bad movie, no matter how much money you spend, people can communicate. They can compare you to everything else out there. They're not going to go after the first weekend. Your speaking has got to stand up to the standards of today. The standards of today are rising, so please keep that in mind. You may be midway through your career, you may be near the end of your career. It is never too late to up your game to improve your public speaking skills. So in order to do that, hey, I'll give you an option. Doesn't cost you a thing. Just come back to this page on Facebook every single day and you'll get more tips, more improvement to get better and better. Because average is no longer good. You've heard red is the new black.
