Emphasizes narrowing to top ideas, using compelling stories, and trusting strong content to outweigh occasional mistakes.

There's an old axiom that people in many sports use which is the best offense is a good defense. Not true. When it comes to public speaking, a great defense is never a great offense. When it comes to public speaking. What do I mean by that? So many people go into a speech with a defensive mentality and it's the idea of, well, I better put this on the slide or Smithers is going to accuse me of leaving something out, or I better spend two hours futzing with the logo in just the right place or the marketing department is going to say I'm not up to code and I better make sure I have just 10 slides and not 12 because our corporate regulations say 12. And of course, I have to start off by thanking every single person in the room or someone might be offended. It's defense, defense, defense. What are you left with? Somebody who maybe didn't offend anyone, but you're left with a speech that isn't memorable, it isn't interesting. Your first priority for any presentation should not be how to avoid offending somebody. Your first priority should always be to figure out, what is it I want this audience to do? What are the ideas that are going to resonate with them, to motivate them to do what I want them to do? How do I narrow it down to the top five? How do I have an interesting, compelling story to make these ideas come alive? You need an offensive mentality with every speech. If you have enough good offense, enough good, memorable messages and points, even if you do make a mistake or a blunder that's likely to be quickly forgotten. I'm TJ Walker. Thanks for joining me. I help people speak their best because how you present your ideas is the number one factor in your success.
