Don't tell your audience that you're afraid of public speaking. Now, this is a bit controversial. Some people disagree with me on this and some people say, oh, wow, it's so disarming. And you're being real and candid and the audience will like you and have empathy for you. If you talk about your fear of public speaking, occasionally that can happen. I mean, if you're a 13 year old and you're speaking to 5,000 adults, yeah, maybe it's endearing. But for everyone else, if you are an adult and you're talking about your business, your services, your products, your new venture, your political campaign, your policy agenda, focus on what is most interesting and most useful and most helpful to your audience. And unless you're speaking exclusively to immediate family members, and even then it's questionable how you feel just isn't that important to the audience. So it's not that they'll hate it or hate you for saying you're sorry or being candid, but it just takes attention away from what's really most helpful and useful to your audience. It's also a bit self indulgent because you got up there presumably to talk about how you can help the audience and now it's, oh, this is about me. How do I feel? Let's talk about me. And that's why I believe in the vast majority of the time you're much better off. Just focus on talking about what's interesting and useful to your audience. You're not looking for pity from the audience. You're looking for them to understand your ideas and remember them so they can take the actions you want. I'm TJ Walker, and if you're interested in being a better speaker, the action I'd like you to take is is to click below or on the side if you're watching this on Facebook. For the way I help people, I have live online courses on demand as well. I have live public workshops in New York City every single month. And I have private workshops conducted all over the world. Check them out, give me a call.
