TJ WALKER - THE HABIT INFLUENCER - Personal Development | LIVE STREAM

TJ Walker explains why repeating yourself isn't always bad. Martin Luther King's repeated phrases worked because they were powerful, not boring. The trick is varying your examples and stories while keeping the core message the same, and watching your audience to know when to move on.

What do good educators and teachers and speakers do not to repeat themselves to annoy their audiences? I want to challenge the assumption embedded in this question. I do appreciate the question. I think a lot of the best speakers in the world do repeat themselves. Martin Luther King repeated I have a dream many times in that speech, and it didn't bother people. It connected the whole theme of the presentations in a way that resonated with people. So I'm not so much worried about repetition now. If you're standing up in front of a classroom and teaching and you're reading the same thing, or you're saying something in the exact same way and it's clearly boring to people, that's a problem. It's quite often how you say it, but many people are bored. When a flight attendant following the law tells you how to put a seatbelt on when you get on a plane, it's boring because we already know how to put a seatbelt on. We've seen the presentation done exactly the same way hundreds of times. So that's why that type of presentation doesn't work. Even though it's really short, it may only be 30 seconds long. On the other hand, if you're interesting, I've seen speakers captivate an audience from 10 in the morning till midnight because they were consistently interesting. I think it's okay to repeat yourself, but if you can use different examples to make your points come alive that you're repeating, that's okay. Give different stories to make your messages come alive, then it's okay. Especially if you're really looking at audience members to see do they get it. Because if you see everyone in your audience understands it, then you can make changes as you go in your presentation and not repeat again. Go off to a new point. The more you speak, the more you get a comfort level in developing a relationship with your audience, the more you'll be in tune with them and you'll know instantly if you're boring them or not. And you can go to the next point.
