I was a housewife, and then my husband was assassinated. I never planned on entering politics, but the next thing you know, I was president. That's who I was comfortable with, and that was my image. My name is Corazon Aquino. Corazon Aquino, of course, the president of the Philippines after the Marcos regime. After Marcos was deposed, she was, by all accounts, a simple housewife. Now, she, of course, was a political partner to her husband, who was assassinated by henchmen from Marcos. But when she was thrust into the limelight, she really had very little political experience. But she spoke in simple terms, using her own words. Simple words, not abstractions, not fancy government bureaucraties. And she did that throughout her term as president and went on in the history books as a very successful, beloved figure. The real lesson here, I think, for many people, is to realize, number one, you never know when you might be in the spotlight. You may think you have absolutely no career ambitions, and things may change, and you may have to do a lot of public speaking. Number two, you don't necessarily have to change who you are. You can still use a simple style that you've used your whole life when speaking to family and friends. If you can speak clearly, directly, in your own style, you can be successful in any arena.
