Public speaking tip of the day. Ipod yourself. Now, this speech tip isn't for everyone and it's not for every speech. But if you have a really big speech, something truly important, your biggest speech of the year, most important audience. You've been asked to give a TED speech to the whole world and you think a million people could watch. This is a technique that could help. So the first part of the advice is similar to advice I give you all the time. Practice your speech out loud. Record it on a cell ph, webcam, iPad. But you may want to take it a step further. You may actually want to read your speech out loud in a conversational way. Get it just right, watch it, do it again and again and again until you've got it just right. Now, here's the extra part, the time consuming part. I want you to listen or watch or both this video several times a day for at least a week. What happens is it just crawls in your brain, it creates tracks in your brain and it just, it's easier to come out. It's like if someone asks you sing row, row, row your boat. You can just say the words or any other childhood song. If you've heard it so many times, it just comes out. You don't really have to think about it. It's not exactly like memorization, but it does help the memory process. It just comes out so smoothly. Again, I don't recommend this for every Monday morning staff meeting speech, but if it's your biggest speech of the year or a really significant audience, or the biggest trade show that you'll be speaking at for the next three years, and you don't want to be seen holding notes or reading off bullet points, this can be a way for you to walk around, talk, seem totally commanding, and you've got a little bit of a crutch because it's already burned into your brain. Try it. If you don't like it, you don't have to do it again, but it certainly can't hurt.
