How long should the introduction be? When someone's introducing you, you're about to speak, how long should the introduction be? The worst mistake you could make is not giving the introducer an introduction. And they just go to your website and hit print and it's some big, long, boring, tedious bio. It takes them three minutes to read and you're only speaking for six minutes. So boom, they've used proportionally 50% of your total time just introducing you. You always want to create a special introduction just for the organization you're speaking to, the event, keeping in mind the audience whetting their appetite to the subject. You're going to talk about and explain to them why you were brought here and why your expertise is relevant. Now, if you're going to stand up and speak for just five minutes, your introduction really shouldn't be more than about 20 or 30 seconds long. It should be very brief. If you're the main keynote speaker at a conference and people have flown all over the world to hear you and you're speaking for 90 minutes, well then a couple of minutes going into some details relevant. But even then, you've got to make sure you just focus on the information and that's most relevant to the audience. It's not a Wikipedia entry. They don't need to know where you went to high school and the degree you had in your second master's. Focus on what's truly most important to your audience. That's going to make them want to hear you speak. Do that and you'll be in great shape. I'm TJ Walker. I help people speak their best.
