Why do people put so much importance on body language now? Everyone has a certain bias. I have a bias, but I'm constantly amazed at. A body language expert will put a video on YouTube and it'll have 20 million views. Someone giving pure public speaking tips will get 10 views. Body language books tend to sell so many more than public speaking books. And people love to quote a survey from 1972 where they completely distort the meaning, which purports to show that 97% or 93% of all communication is about body language and your voice. And that's not what the study said. I think people like this because it seems fun, it seems different. They associate body language with their dating life and helping them more popular with members of the opposite sex and good things happening. And it seems sort of separate from what you're actually saying. In some ways, it's almost less personal. If you can focus on, oh, I shouldn't move my hands, which is a myth, by the way, then I'm not focused on actually saying something interesting and giving stories to make the point come alive. Is body language important? Sure. But you can have the best body language in the world. When it comes to speaking and presenting and communicating in the media, if you have no message that's interesting or memorable, nothing matters. You haven't accomplished anything. So my recommendation is, of course, practice on video till you're comfortable with your body language. But that's just the starting point. You've really got to focus on your message. I'm T.J. walker.
