I'm one of the founding fathers of the United States of America, and I love to speak. I can speak and I can speak at length, but sometimes you have to just sum it all up quickly for people. And that's why I say, give me liberty or give me death. My name is Patrick Henry. A lot of communication lessons can be learned from Patrick Henry. We like to think that being short, concise, speaking in under 140 characters is some modern Twitter invention, but it's not great. Communicators have always realized that there's a time and a place for giving a big, lengthy 60 minute, 90 minute speech, but there's also a time and a place. You even within speeches to sum up everything succinctly in one sentence, Give me liberty or give me death sums up exactly how Patrick Henry thought about continuing the state's relationship with England. Let everybody know what he thought about the Revolution. And it did it so briefly. Why was that quotable? Because it had an absoluteness to. Had a simplicity to it, it had an action to it. Give me death. It doesn't get much more action oriented than that. It was the perfect modern sound bite. It was the perfect modern tweet because it was short, concise action, emotion, absolute, very intense. It just goes to show that great communicators throughout time follow a lot of the same basic principles. So if you want to improve your own communication skills, sure, give speeches, even give long speeches when you need to, but at some point, be able to sum it up briefly, succinctly, with emotion, with action, and with an absolute conviction.
